Tayali’s trial fails to commence again

Chilufya Tayali’s trial in a defamation and publishing defamatory matter failed to commence in the Lusaka Magistrates’ Court yesterday because his lawyer was not around.

And magistrate Sylvia Munyinya complained that the matter has on several occasions been adjourned at the instance of Tayali who is president for opposition, Economic and Equity Party.

She however, adjourned the case to April 1 but added that on that date, she will proceed to hear the matter with or without Tayali’s lawyer, Jonas Zimba.

Edward Sichali, who is the complainant in the matter, last October complained against Tayali over statements he posted on his Facebook page, among them that: “I know even the people that got money to sponsor, to organise the UNZA riot, Edward [Sichali] naumfwa [you have heard”.

The accused further alleged that Sichali and Hichilema were involved in organising riots at the University of Zambia but Tayali denied the charges.

Trial failed to commence because Tayali’s lawyer Zimba was not around.

However, the private prosecutors were ready to proceed with trial.
