Chinese national fined K2,000, 11 granted bail in a cannabis cultivation case

ONE of the 12 Chinese nationals were arrested in Chipata for unlawful cultivation of fresh cannabis weighing 6.2. Kilogrammes has been fined K2,000 by the Chipata Magistrate court.

Magistrate Mercy Chabu fined Qi Jianlong K 2000 which he paid and  later released after he pleaded guilty to the charge.

The suspects are part of the people that are constructing the new provincial studios for ZNBC in Chipata.

Magistrate Chabu granted a K5,000 bail to each of the 11 other suspects who pleaded not guilty to the charge and these include Ten Mao 46, mechanic, Yu Riping 41 assistant manager, Sun Shengzi 51 cook, Qiang Xuehua 51 carpenter, Huang Hongbing 39 carpenter, Jia Yinsheng

50 carpenter, Kue Yunnai 51 carpenter, Tang Zhangechang 24, engineer, Zhang Yijian 39, mechanic, Xu Yihai 51, foreman, Chen Minqiang 28 civil engineer.

The 11 are supposed to present one surety each liable to a K10,000 and should surrender their passports to the clerk of court.

Earlier DEC public relations officer Theresa Katongo confirmed the arrest of the 12 suspects.

The Chinese are represented by Alex Musanya of Zambezi chambers.

The matter was adjourned to January 24, for mention and January 30 for trial.
