Chipata court finds police officer with case to answer

A 27 year old police officer from Chama district in Muchinga Province has been found with a case to
answer by the Chipata magistrates’ court where he stands charged with possession of rescribed government trophy.
Particulars before the court were that Owen Hakalima was found in possession of five ivory pieces weighing 12 kilograms, on April, 18 last year in Chipata.
Hakalima was later arrested and charged jointly with another person who later fled.
Delivering a ruling after the state closed its case, principal resident magistrate Jennipher Bwalya said the state had managed to establish a primafacie case against the accused and put him on his defence.
Hakalima who is being represented by senior Legal Aid counsel John Phiri said he would give his defence on oath but would not call any witness.
Magistrate Bwalya adjourned the matter to June, 27 for commencement of defense and extended Hakalima’s police bond.
