Chipata man jailed for assault

The Chipata magistrates’ court yesterday sentenced a 39-year-old man of Mchini compound to eight months imprisonment with hard labour for assaulting his girlfriend.
Before Magistrate Pauline Mulenga was Showgun Tembo who guilty to one count of assault occasioning actual bodily harm.
Facts before court were that Tembo assaulted Mwansa Mwaba on 11 January 11 this year.
The court heard that on the material day, Tembo went to Mwaba’s house and spent a night there.
The court further heard that the following day, Mwaba asked for K10 from Tembo so that she could buy soap.
The prosecution added that Tembo became annoyed and beat up the Mwaba who sustained a broken hand.
The prosecution submitted that Mwaba went to the hospital and the matter was reported to Chipata College police post and Tembo was subsequently arrested.
In mitigation, Tembo complained that he had never met the Mwaba from the time he was arrested and that he did not know how the court could help him.
In her judgment Magistrate Mulenga said she had taken into consideration what Tembo who was the first offender said in mitigation.
She noted that cases like the one Tembo committed were on the increase and that a lot of people had lost lives.
Magistrate Mulenga sentenced Tembo to eight months imprisonment, effective the date of arrest.
