Katete man jailed five years for burglary and theft

The Katete magistrates’ court has sentenced a man of Luangwa Section of Katete District to 5 years imprisonment with hard labour for burglary and theft.
Lawrence Phiri a 28 year-old Bricklayer was sentenced to five years imprisonment with hard labour for committing 17 burglary and theft offences, contrary to the law.
Phiri was charged and found guilty in 17 counts after he admitted all the counts of burglary and theft which he committed at night between November 2017 and January 2018.
According to facts presented in court, Phiri broke into 17 different home in three mnths and stole property worth K70, 000.
And passing judgment, Katete district magistrate Mary Musongole questioned what would have been happening if Phiri were not busted.
Magistrate Musongole said because of the seriousness of the matter, each of the 17 counts would carry 18 months imprisonment with hard labour.
