Announce the floor price of maize – East CSPR

BY Staff Reporter

DELAY by government to announce the floor price of maize for this year’s marking season has worried  Civil Society for Poverty Reduction (CSPR) Eastern Province coordinator Samsom Mbewe.

And speaking to this morning Mbewe also challenged the government to consider increasing the floor price of maize from K65.00 to K75.00 per 50 kilograms this year.

“As CSPR in the Eastern Province we are concerned to note that government has not yet announced the floor price of maize for this year’s marketing season. There is need for the government to come out quickly and announce the price of maize so that farmers are aware of the price at which there are going to sell their maize,” said Mbewe

“If government was to delay to announce the price, briefcase buyers will come in and buy all the maize from our farmers. I’m also challenging the government to pay our farmers on time after buying maize from them this year”.

He however, lamented that the Food Reserve Agency had been struggling to pay farmers on time in the past three years, a situation which was unacceptable.

Government through the FRA has not yet announced the floor price for this year’s crop marketing season, a thing which has worried some civil society organisation across the country.
