Mushipe briefly detained for absconding court proceedings

LUSAKA resident magistrate Nsunge Chanda on Monday threw lawyer Martha Mushipe in the Magistrates’ Court cells for absconding court proceedings.
This was after Mushipe appeared before court following a bench warrant that was issued against her.
In this case, Mushipe who is a director of Nyenyezi Christian Academy is jointly charged with other directors for failure to produce NAPSA documents for the employees.
After several hours in the cells, Mushipe in the afternoon was presented before court for plea but it could not take off as she needed time to study the indictment.
And magistrate Chanda reprimanded Mushipe before pardoning her.
The magistrate, however, warned Mushipe that she will not tolerate her escalating habit of absconding court proceedings.
On Mushipe’s explanation that she forwarded a sick note to the public prosecutor, magistrate Chanda refused to take her reasons but gave her a benefit of doubt and advised her to be following the right procedure.
Magistrate Chanda also wondered why Mushipe had continued sending different people to represent her without giving proper reasons on why she was failing to attend court proceedings.
She further advised Mushipe that if anything comes up, she should follow right channels so that she is not seen to be running away from the court.
Magistrate Chanda adjourned the case to June 4 for plea.
